He was active in realms of typography, exhibition design, and book design as well, and his publication Japan Style was released in 1980 alongside the Victoria and Albert Museum exhibition of the same name. Tanaka is also widely recognized for his posters designs for Noh productions and other performances and exhibitions staged in Japan and beyond. Though keenly sensitive to historical precedents and established conventions, Tanaka nevertheless maintained a degree of playfulness in his work, manipulating color, scale, and form to reconfigure familiar iconographies into fresh and accessible visual representations. His use of bold, polychromatic geometries and his harnessing of the dynamic visual potential of typography are undergirded by a sensitivity towards traditional Japanese aesthetics. He is credited with developing the foundational graphic identity for lifestyle brand Muji, emphasizing the "no brand" quality of their products through unadorned, charming line drawings paired with straightforward slogans. Tanaka is widely recognized for his prolific body of interdisciplinary work, which includes graphic identity and visual matter for brands and corporations including Seibu Department Stores, Mazda, Issey Miyake, Hanae Mori, and Expo 85. That's the challenge we give ourselves.Ikko Tanaka (田中 一光, Tanaka Ikkō, Janu– January 10, 2002) was a Japanese graphic designer. We aim to make our designs fresh and beautiful, but also self-explanatory, understandable, and quiet (never shouting). An object might be complex in its variety of functions, but it shouldn't be complicated looking. We believe good design starts from function (because products are for use), but at the same time any new product we design should have its own individual character. They design products for residential and contract use from their studio and workshop on Lauttasaari island in Helsinki. Mika and Julie founded Studio Tolvanen in 2015. Julie is an American designer who worked 10 years as a woodworker before moving to Finland in 2009 to get a masters in furniture design. Mika is a Finnish designer who started his own practice after graduating from Royal College of Art in 2001. Studio Tolvanen is the product design office of Mika & Julie Tolvanen. Furnishing Utopia provides an international platform for critical dialog and creation of new knowledge by investigating how design can engage with the pursuit of a more perfect way of life. John and Wonhee are founding members of the design collective Furnishing Utopia, where they have worked to better understand, promote and preserve cultural heritage through workshops and exhibitions. Their methods are deeply rooted in the act of physical making where an object’s form evolves out of an experimental constructive approach to design. As designers, they draw from their background in sculpture and craft to create works that balance function and aesthetics. Their designs are informed by speculative academic research which explores culture, history and technology, and how objects and ideas evolve to fit the needs of contemporary life. Studio Gorm creates simple, practical and thoughtful products, furniture, lighting, and exhibitions.
